yes you can control your laptop also...
for IR transmitter.. just take your Phillips TV remote.. or go to nearby TV store ask for a 90-channel TV remote it might cost you around Rs 50-90.
If you have a Symbian Mobile with IR, then you can get a IR Remote application from Psiloc
select add device and then select Phillips TV. and now you can use your mobile phone as your transmitter and.. for receiver you can make use of the circuit given in the project.

Make use of USB to RS232 Converter and connect the receiver to that RS232 port... make yourself relax when using PC/Laptop

well if the remote support RC5 protocol then you can use it... you can get the remote from anywhere in the market.. no need to worry...

also there is just one library file needed MSCOMM32.ocx which i have added in the project files already and all you need to do is copy it in your "c:\windows\system" folder...

whatever details you want just post the code here.. i will explain...

well... RC5 remotes works on 36Khz frequency so you cannot use anything else than TSOP1736.. and usually Phillips remote you get from the TV repair shop or local TV market they are RC5 only.. because its the basic protocol for Phillips remotes..
