Hi Guyz,

I want to design a Real time system which continuously monitor the Distribution Transformer ( DTC) secondary winding output from which power lines are connected to Consumers and to transmit the real time information of power consumed on each powerline to the Power Distribution system using GSM which will be communicated to the PC where all the timely database of each line are stored.

In simple i want to make the the Distribution transformer system as fully automated system since till now reading of DTC Meter reading is taken manually by the power distribution System once in a month. Based on that Reading they will come to know the distribution losses or Power Theft from the DTC Meter to the each consumer end.

As of now I don't have much idea of Distribution Transformer and the parameter involved tn that. Only I know it's having primary winding and secondary winding and the secondary circuit in that converts 11KV input to 240V for the consumer.

So to start of with this project and get to know all the parameters involved in this I am thinking a silly idea to make the small protype with Step down trasformer of 240V to 12v/24V of 1 or 3 ampere which we use normally in our design. where the output will be connected to number of small parallel loads (which will be considered as each consumer lines in a actual system ). So I need to monitor the power consumed in each line and that information has to send it through GSM modem. I am much familiar with GSM and only the problem how to monitor each line and parameters involved in that.

Can any Embedded Guru's help me in this project.

if I am not wrong , ur application seems to relate to measuring the energy consumption of the distribution line from the secondary of the transformer. So u can use the energy meter IC CS5460A . check its datasheet for connection to the 230V mains line to measure the current consumption and voltage monitoring. The rest of the project is already known to u .
Do share ur results.

Thanks pdi for the Reply

ya You are right . My application is to measure the energy consumption of distribution line given to the consumer from the secondary of the transformer.I will go through the details of Energy meter IC CS5460A.

But one more problem is like How can I monitor all the lines emerging out from that Distribution transformer. i think there might be around of minimum of 50 to 100 lines.Whether I need to monitor each line by making use of the above said chip to each line or is there any other alternative so that i can monitor all the lines with the single chip.

hi sanath,
for ur application, monitoring the voltage would not be a problem as the lines coming out of the distribution txformer would be in parallel and u can sense voltage from any one line. But as far as the current is concerned, if u want to monitor the total current consumption, u must connect it in series with the main line before the distributing junction.
note that u may have to use a current transformer as the currents may exceed hundreds of amperes and a contactless type of current measurement would be unavoidable .C.T.s are practically available to measure a.c. currents even upto thousands of amperes.

Alternatively, if u want to monitor the current of each individual branch, then u have to invariably use that many current sensing inputs though the voltage sensing can be for a single line.

Thankz PDI for the valuable reply

Might be at this point of time I am bit confused with all these things since I don't have the much idea of Parameters involved in this. So let me analyze it more practically and also let me have the real view of Distribution transformer and meter attached to it.

So till that time

Hi Guyz

As i said me had a on sight view of 11KV Distribution transformer and DTC Meter.
The below fig shows the that conceptual view of Distribution transformer and Its DTC Meter

Here I need to monitor this DTC Meter values ( such as Power factor , Volatage at the load and total energy consumption) and has to communicate through GSM / GPRS which is the objective to acheive.

So I think there is no need to design the new DTC Meter by making use of above said chip or making use CTand PT .....Alternatively it can be done as designing the small module which will be attached to this DTC Meter as the one we are doing in prepaid energy meter system where we will be reading out the Pulse from the Meter ( from that LED Blinking point ) and by making use of Opto-isolator PC817 for isolation and will be given to the Controller Port Input.

Please let me know whether the above said method is feasible and also parameters involved in calculating Power factor, energy consumption , voltage at the current load
