Well modem seller sell GSM modem as module part (which you have received) and as a stand alone modem (with RS232 connector and a connector for Power).

In your case i believe you have got GSM module, you need to make or get a PCB done to get it working. I guess its better to get its evaluation board ( I am not sure if you will get one ) but try to ask the vendor if they have ready PCBs available with them.

hello again
is any body know if siemens TC63 or TC65 or MC75 module can used for transmitting data over IP
I had downloaded the at command for all and searched for any useful information about that question and i didn't found or by another meaning can't find

thanks i found information about sending data over ip for that modules
where all of them support tcp socket which enable the module to act as tcp client or server

I was just wondering, does the SIM300 need some kind of evaluation board?
I don't understand how it is attached on to the stripboard with its flat back.
Ajay, u keep mentioning modem board, is that the evaluation board I'm suppose to get?

VioletRock

Sorry... I think I may have misled you

The module you have will do the job you want, but only if you connect the various
add-ons. (Sim holder , antenna etc.)
You will need a special board to do that if you can't make your own PCBs.
You can buy a board, but would be expensive.

To be practical.. the way to get you working now
is probably to use a mobile phone to send the SMS messages.

This is common practise and has been covered in many threads here
and on the net. See our GSM forum.

You need a suitable phone and a connector.
Older model phones and connectors are often available cheaply on ebay.
Sony Ericcson T290/i and T68/i were popular for this.

Do you have a mobile ? and if so what kind.

I think I'm willing to do the PCB. I have friends who know how to do the printing and all.
Anyway, right now, I have my gsm module, my gps module, and our PIC.
I haven't bought the antenna yet.
But what else do I need to connect them on the board?

I'm also looking for circuit diagrams to see the pin connection for the 3 components. Coz I have no idea which pin should be connected where. Still searching n reading forums online.

Before I start connecting everything on board, I wanna be sure of the order of things. Like, do I design the PCB & connect & solder everything on board first, or do I program the PIC first, or communicate with the modem first. Like in what order do I attend to them?

VioletRock we need to build (or order would be fine for me!) an evaluation board for the module before we can communicate with it. In other words we need to interface the module with RS232, sim holder, antennas and power supply.

I looked at the specs of the SIM548c module, it uses a 60 pin DIP connector.
Does anyone know where I could get one? I searched the net, I didn't find any DIP connector of this size (maximum 40).
Is DIP connector common,? is it the same type as what is callled 'board-to-board connector'

We really need your help on this guys!

PS: VioletRock don't hesitate to let me know about ur progress. I will do it too. Currently asking the vendor where we could get evb-kit (waiting for reply...)

EDIT: got the answer, the evb costs 120$! more than twice the price of the module itself!

please check the connector with your vendor...
i've got mine for only USD1.50 each [part number: 1590060-09T-R]

You can see the type of items you need here
http://www.soselectronic.com/?str=371&artnum=55884

VioletRock

The antenna connects to the tiny connector on the corner of the board.
You often plug this item into the board
http://www.soselectronic.com/?str=371&artnum=53551
then connect the full antenna to it.

To use the SIM300 modem you need to be able to make connections to it.
Unfortunatly the only way to connect to the SIM300 is through
a tiny 60 way connector.
The job of the "interface" PCB is to hold a matching connector and connect the
signal to pads or sockets big enough to work with.

The SIM300 connector is tiny and will need a high standard of PCB and soldering.

A minimal "interface" PCB could just hold the connector and have pads big enough to solder to.
A better board will also hold the SIM holder.
If your helpers are willing , you can put the PIC and other components on the PCB.

Take a look at this thread
http://www.edaboard.com/ftopic178607.html
It gives a good idea of what is needed.

After all that, I have to say that I think it is too much for the time you have,
with too many things to cause delays.
I think you should leave the SIM300 for later research and use a mobile
phone to send yous SMS messages.

Mobiles use the same sort of GSM modems with AT commands, so it is very similar setup.
This will leave you time for the rest of your project.

You can do most things in Parallel, doing one job if you get delayed(or fed up) with another.

A start might be..
design your board, which means knowing exactly which parts you need.
While waiting for the board and parts think about your program.
Ideally you can connect your modem to a PC to practise sending SMS messages.
Using a mobile makes this easy
Connect your GPS to your PC to understand the output and how to
know what information you looking for.

Now think about how to get the data from the GPS and send as SMS messages in the form
that the final display program will need.

Work out how to do this in whatever language you are using to program the PIC.

In your spare time
Build a simple PIC board, breadboard should do, and
write some simple test programs for the PIC, such as flashing a LED, to get the hang of it.

Which PIC are you using ?.

Hey pachinko27,

I just realized you gave me the exact part number of the connector I need. I searched 2 hours over the net without finding it. I also checked the link you gave me, but I can't find it either.
Could you tell me where you got yours?

I'm from Malaysia.. I ordered mine from Excelpoint Malaysia (directly go to their office). They also has offices in Australia, China/Hong Kong, India, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. I think you can order from them thru e-mail. Just give them the exact part number.
