Noob here, Can anyone help me. I want to use a real time clock module with multiple alarm triggers on my project. I've been studying how DS1307 works and but most of it I can't comprehend. So I have some few questions in mind.

Can I have multiple alarm trigger?
What's the purpose of the micro controller here?
What's the best micro controller to use and can I use PIC? if so what model?

I only know how to program pic so it can be convenient for me to use it. Thanks for the replys.

hi tra,

Answers to your questions..

1.) Can i have a multiple alarm trigger?

Yes you can have multiple alarms in your system. It all depends on your program.

2.) Purpose of Microcontroller

The DS 1307 is only a RTC time keeper IC. It sends input to the Microcontroller which in turn processes it and gives an output. How will you display the time without a microcontroller to decipher what the DS1307 is trying to say?

3.)Best micro controller to use

Since you have a good base in programming in PIC, use PIC itself

Suggestion: If you are not familiar with DS1307 and if accuracy is not the priority, try writing a program for a clock with an Interrupt Service Routine to count every second...
hint:
if(second>59)
increment minute;

Since you are a newbie, I have posted a few suggestions on how to proceed with the project in a thread. It is in http://www.8051projects.net/forum-t30865.html
The softwares ive mentioned there work for PIC too. If you like it,dont forget to post a reply there...

Take care...
