changing this project (Data acquisition system using 8051) to another type of DAQ...need help

hi everyone ,
im new to this forum glad to meet u all.
im thinking of changing this project(Data acquisition system using 8051) a bit and use it to my final year project..
the thing is i need some help with the new system that im design...
i want to collect data on industrial machine/motor using temp and vibration sensor... then use the data i collect to find a trend to use in remote diagnosis(

how about this project... need some opinion or idea to improve the project..

yes u can change that project according to ur need
u want vibration and temp
as temp is already in project now u need vibration only
which sensor u will use for vibration
ru want to limit the vibration in a range or some other purpose of vibration
give some info on vibration part

the sensor that i will use is piezoelectric vibration sensor.....
what do u think about this sensor and if u have better sensor to use pls care to tell....
about the range of the vibration sensor, i didt plat to limit it because im planning to take the data ...
and use the collected data to identify a trend, which will help to plan a maintenance.... and this also will help to avoid unplanned maintenance....

im also planning to change VB of the original project to my project.... and i need help in this cozs im newbie in VB....

i also plan to change the serial port that communicate with computer with usb port....and i didt have any information on that also if u have any info hv to change serial port to usb pls inform me...

this is roughly my plan for my final year project wat u think....

You can make use USB to uart converter IC from FTDI (http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/ICs/FT232BM.htm) FT232BM. that will solve your problem

regarding vibration sensor piezo type sensor are good and easy to use. You can use them. rest majoka can comment on it

i agree with ajay on the above given solutions
at initial stage usb to serial converter can be used or chip from FTDI can also be used this will create a virtual comm port
in coding u will treat a usb as a com port so vb coding will also be easy
and 8051 can't directly communicate with usb so conversion is necessary
it is done by converter

i have a some doubts first the data collected from the sensor are they saved at the microcontroller or computer..
second what programing software they us c++, keil or other cozs im not familiar with programming and need to learn the basic first....

at first stage as adc convert the data controller read it and store the data in its ram that u declare in c as a variable
