hi Andy I think you do not understand where to connect + and - of 9 v battery as you can see +ve terminal of 9v battery to be connected on top red point as mentioned +9v and -ve terminal to be connected to ground of circuit ie below R5 (100 ohms) i also suggest you to please gain some knowledge about circuit symbols you can visit following site
