What is the simplest idea of algorithm behind maze solver robot (black line follower based), and how should be the placement of sensors ? It should solve any geometric figure and obstacle avoidance facility. Any idea is most welcome.

I would say the simplest most basic algorithm of doing so, is based on computer vision to subtract the black tracks from the backgroud "floor" using a color filter. This should be a piece of a cake if u used an embedded board on ur robot or else do the data processing part on ur PC over a wireless link, a zigbee probably.

That is w.r.t to PC, but I want it to be fully micro-controller based as the rules say for robotic competitions.

Have a look at this one http://robotechno.us/super-tiny-line-follower-robot.html

Ok that is all about line follower robot but where is maze solving algorithm.
