Hi. I want to build a motorcycle alarm. I'm wondering if it's possible to send a sms wirelessly to my mobile phone when the bike is interrupted. If so, what modules do I need?

Hello Mac,

are you very particular about sending SMS only when the bike is tampered, bcoz when you get SMS on your Mobile your are notified by a small beep/tone/alert.

in emergencies like theft you need something like real ringing on your mobile, as if your bike it self is calling you for help !

there are two ways of doing this job : Easy way and Fancy(hi-fi) way.

both the ways need a Mobile phone probably GSM & a micro

Fancy way :

1) Mobile phone with easily accessible Serial port
2) Micro
3) Data bus cable
4) good/fair knowledge of mobile AT commands
5) lot of programming/debugging


Easy way (my way of doing it):
1) any old, stupid,outdated,working Mobile phone with/without serial port
2) micro
3) ??????

tell me if you are interested in my (easy) way of doing the job

Hi, Arun. Instead of keeping a mobile in the bike that sends the message to the mobile in my pocket. I was wondering if there was, a SMS module available in the market that could send the message to my phone?

I'm not picky, about SMS or ringing. Just so long as I know.

You are right Colin, there are modules available in the market which can send SMS and even place a call. You can find them on google.

Plus they can be easily interfaced with microcontrollers.

On second thoughts I'm going to go with a Nokia 3220 phone. Those modems are expensive.

Hi Arun. I'm looking at FBUS. It uses Tx and Rx like regular RS232 at 115,200 baud.
Except I found some C code for a PIC and nokia 3220 and the person is using 9600 baud. Can you tell what he is doing from this zip of schematic and code attached? Is it Fbus?

Mobile phone will be fine until you are making project at your own, but when you want to launch it commercially, I think there must be some proprietary issue with Nokia or other mobile phone manufacturer.

You must confirm it with Nokia people!

thats why you always look for GSM modems when making these kind of projects. You get the modems or modules and use it as per your needs. no issue

1. GSM modems are designed to work for 24 hours 365 days continuously without any problem.

2. GSM modems comes with RS-232 port, i.e. it is very easy to interface with uControllers.

3. Few modems comes with open AT, so you can do even more with these modems!
