The transistor is used more as an inverter......you need a low at the 555 reset pin when the output of the sensor is high and vice-versa.
The 555 is configured as a monostable and in a monostable the output duration(here 0.242s) should be greater than input pulse(provided by the visitor interrupting the sensor).Surely you would want to give atleast 0.24 seconds for a person to pass through .... do consider a fat guy walking past at a leisurely pace

ok i explain from room.gif
first the left side of AT89S52:
you see two sensors. sensors are connected in the following way on the entrance of door.
---> Entrance this way -->  --------
  S S
  1 2
  --------

S1 is sensor 1 and S2 is sensor 2
555 timers gives high->low pulse whenever user crosses the sensor.

Now right side of AT89S52, you have 7-segments to show count and one bulb through relay. When user count in room is greater than 0 blub glows.. if users in room are 0 blub switches off.. hence controlling the room's light.

Now room1.gif
it just have two transmitter circuit which will be on the other side of door facing the receivers(sensors) on the other side of door.

I hope circuit is clear to you now.. is there anything else you want to know about?

well i think you are confusing yourself and not getting the real thing.

I tell you.. as i explained earlier, sensors are connected at the door stacked one after the other.. from the entrance side sensor 1 comes and then sensor 2.

So when you enter inside the room, you cross first sensor and then second sensor.. and room visitor count is incremented by 1. when you come out of room.. you cross sensor 2 and then sensor 1 and count is decremented by 1.

If the count is greater than 0, then light is on... and if count is 0 then light is off. This is how room lights are controlled automatically. and thats the main purpose of this project.

PS: Please do not make multiple posts.. you can click on edit icon to edit your post and add anything you want in your post

See,there has to be some way to tell if a person has entered the room or left it,so that the visitor count could be correspondingly incremented or decremented. If only one sensor were used there would be no way to tell if an interruption occured due to a person entering or going out(and you can't have one sensor for incoming and one for outgoing since the entry&exit door is common).
So you use 2 sensors(say a,b) and look for the sequence of interruption. If sequence is a,b then increment counter. If seq is b,a then decrement counter.I haven't seen the code but probably should be like this.
The 33ohms resistor is used for limiting the current into the infrared diode.
