Non-engineers can do the same thing using a pre-built CAN dongle and easier code. Look at ECOM dongle for a CAN device that uses an 8051 as its core, but already has a programming interface for PCs.Every major microcontroller manufacturer also provides many CAN examples for driving steppers and such based on reference designs.
