Which GSM modem/module to start with?

I want to get a GSM modem to play with and learn AT command etc as I will have to use one as part of a college project next year.

Wondering which one I should start with or is there much difference.I will probably only be using it for sms (atleast to begin with), I know I need AT command and RS-232 support, is there anything else I should look out for.

SIM300 try it.. it has got easy set of commands.

yes thats fine.. cost seems a bit high it should be $25-$30

The first link... is $31 + $9 for P&P, cant seem to find any cheaper than that.

welcome good luck. single module cost that much so its fine. bulk rates are always cheaper.

well no. just open AT Command manual with hyper terminal and modem connected to PC.

try commands and understand them more you try more you get to know them.

Before buying a SIM300 unit take a look at this thread.

To use the item off ebay you need a lot of extra bits, such as an adapter board
costing more than the modem.

Consider this item or similar as it appears to come complete.
