Do not worry about TSOP1738. it has only the front window (the bulgy part) so you need not to worry about covering it from 3 sides. and its dark color prevent it from ambient light.

yes. you can.. can you please explain what actually you are trying to do? placement of sensors sometime depends on actual work to be done.

We r doing a project in wich the detector has to detect the signal reflected from an obstacle ...
We ve to place both the IR led and the detector side by side...
wich was causing the detector to detect the signal directly frm the led n not the reflected ones.
our doubt ws hw exactly can we eliminate ths prblm... as the deadline is approaching can u pls suggest some idea..
we read articles wer thy had mentioned of shielding the detector by using alluminium foil..
can u through some light on it...
thanx

place IR LED and TSOP at some distance.. keep the face of LED and TSOP in forward direction. there should not be any problem as such.
shielding is needed in special cases where you have many sources of light. here you have only 1 IR LED and one detector so wont be a problem. place them at some distance.. like 4-5cm.

try sheilding leds instead of detector...
place detector little in fromt of leds..
use a pvd wire coating or... any other pipe like thing to shield leds..

LED gives minimum or close to 0 illumination when looking from the sideways. but just for safety sake if you want you can shield. You can do testing without shield first.. to get a better idea..
