Hi,

When i was small i used to play this video games(mario, Shooting games)
In this shooting games there was a gun we need to show and trigger it to TV monitor.
Whenever we point to the bird or evil the particular was getting killed.
Now i am surprised how it works.
Can any one tell what was the logic behind it.

Kiran this Shooting System is founded by Nintendo Games in 1930 then in 1973.....

There are two types of these shooting mechanism

1. Laser Clay Shooting (1973)
2. Light Gun Shooting (1930)

Laser Clay Shooting

A series of reflections determines whether or not the target was hit by the "laser shot"; when a hit is registered, the projector displays a picture of a destroyed target. This system consisted of an overhead projector which displayed moving targets behind a background; players would fire at the targets with a rifle, in which a mechanism of reflections would determine whether or not the "laser shot" from the rifle hit the target.

Light Gun Shooting

Light Guns Shooting is in use since 1930 by the development of light-sensing vacuum tubes, it is an old system which now contains a photo diode (or a photo transistor) in the barrel. The photo diode is able to sense light coming from the screen. The gun also contains a trigger switch. The output of the photo diode and the switch are fed to the computer controlling the game.

How Exact Position of Object is traced ??

you know about the horizontal retrace and vertical retrace signals used to align the picture on the screen. The screen driver electronics send pulses to the computer at the start of the horizontal and vertical retrace signals, so the computer knows where on the screen the electron beam is located during each frame.

The computer normally uses one of two different techniques to figure out whether or not the gun is pointed at the target when the user pulls the trigger:

I.The computer blanks the screen and then paints just the target object white. If the photodiode senses darkness after one vertical retrace signal and then light after the next, the computer assumes that the gun is pointed at the target and scores a hit.

II.The computer blanks the screen and then paints the entire screen white. It takes time for the electron beam to trace the entire screen while painting it white. By comparing the signal coming from the photo diode with the horizontal and vertical retrace signals, the computer can detect where the electron beam is on the screen when the photo diode first senses its light. The computer counts the number of microseconds that pass between the time the horizontal and vertical retrace signals start and the time the photo diode first senses light. The number of microseconds tells the computer exactly where on the screen the gun is pointing. If the calculated position and the position of the target match, the computer scores a hit.

Thanks mirza,
I got the concept. But this doesnt work on LCD/LED TVs i think. bcoz there is no interlaced scanning method.

welcome Kiran and old Light Guns cannot be used on the newer LCD and plasma screens, and have problems with projection screens. But Laser Clay Shooting system can be used for LCD/LED TVs.....

Very nice mojaka.
The game developing is fantastic job.
In national geographic channel i saw how the games been developed and more interesting is testing those games. The game testers have to explore each and every parts of the game.Nice profession daily playing.

@ Mirza,
The clay shooting concept is nice one. Some kind image processing is needed i think to develop those type of applications.

@kiran yes you can make it using image processing have to use DSP kit for this purpose.....
