Yes its right now do not confuse yourself. Its not mandatory that you must use the above configuration for LCD, you can use any pin you want for your LCD connections.
and for VDD you can also connect a Potentiometer for varying the contrast.

Yes actually using a pot was how I was able to get the contrast on the test. But when I tested the LCD prior I only used bins DB4 to DB7 or as my manual calls it a 4-bit interface but when dealing with 8-bits I have to use DB0 to DB7 so I was just wondering do you know off hand which interface this clock will require? Today I will be playing with it most of the morning so I may update a few more times.

In my program it is using 8-bit interface. If you write your own.. you can change it to whatever mode you want

Well I tried it again and once again I got those boxes again, but the buzzer was in fact working so I'm not sure what is going on. I connected it up exactly as my last post and it still wasn't working properly. So I really am at a loss of how exactly this problem is occurring. Also just to be sure I downloaded and tried the hex of the 1X16 LCD display and I still get the same problem. The only thing I can think of is that my connections are still wrong but I really don't know what to do, my best guess is that the program is up and working it is just that the LCD is not getting information to it.

Ok! I was talking about general connectivity in your previous post.
Try connecting the LCD as per the connections mentioned in the schematic. It will work for sure!!
