the idea is to ad a fully automatic device, which runs on its own, to the normally used street light structures, so tht they'll operate according to light conditions... we r nt makin wodespread chngs in the existing infrastructure, just adding a device to them..

A good idea.. but it has already been done.
Many years ago street lights in the UK used a light dependent resitor and a bimetalic strip to do that.
Later models use triacs as switches.

You *could* add a micro to the sytem somewhere, but it wouldn't be useful.

Your project would be...
Test light dependent resitor
If it's dark.. put light on
If it's light put light off

I would suggest you to do little more if you can
control dimmness of bulb + ON/OFF control according to surrounding light. that is more to be done by controller than a normal LDR.

Perhaps I do sound a bit negative

This may be a good project for you, it depends on what you
are expected to produce.
Using a micro would simplify the circuit, and give better control of
switching.
(Modern units probably do use micros)

I just wanted to say, that what you have described is a fairly a simple project,
and you said you wanted...
" help for major project of light sensitive street lighting."

How are the lights controlled at the moment ?

@ akshat,

please don't " impose" a micro into a simple project that can be made with discrete components.

having said that, here's something that could make your project really standout !

here's the idea : use a micro to normally switch On and Off the street light plus you can have a feature that reports to the electricity dept. any failure of the street light i,e when the street light is faulty or not working the linesmen should get an SMS or a Call to notify the faulty light. the location name/street no: etc can be sent to the dept via SMS.

this feature makes your project interesting and justifies the use of a decent micro like 8051

all the best!

@Arun
Would it be alright to use one of those nasty 8 pin PICS

@ UKX,

the nasty 8 pin Pics are way too costly in India, you'll get 4 pcs of 89S52 for the price of 1 12F series PIC,

PICs and AVRs are too costly here and in colleges most projects are build around the universal 8051's.

i have given you an "Idea" for making your project interesting and now its up to you to search for the bits and pieces and join them to complete your project. c'mon its your project and you should work, don't expect that code will appear in front you just like that.

now this where you need to start; search for the projects/forum threads etc which have "interfacing GSM mobile to microcontroller" as topic our forum has many posts related to this subject. also look for " AT commands" posts
