Hi

noob who has just finished an Advanced Diploma in Computers Systems have a a couple of months or so to kill before I start uni course in CS and Computer Engineering.

Have done several uC & uP subjects:

PIC - assembly
PIC - C (Hi-Tech)
M68HC11 - C

Assembly - 80x86 TASM - Borland
C & C++ - 80x86 (several) - Borland C/C++

All are engineering-based - hardware design, interfacing.

Just curious of advantages/disadvantages of 8051 architecture, etc.

Thanks...

seems u have worked on both proccessors and controllers.....
at least u wud know their advantages n disadvantages......
with 8051 u will find working a lot easier as compared to other ucs (u already used PICs).
the problem comes when you r working on a project which requires large RAM and complex calcultions ... there people tend to go for AVRs and finally ARM .
there are also time that u wud prefer other ucs over 8051 cause it being 8 bit while u wud find some in th 16-32 bit region...... :mad
well one of my client was using 8 bit ucs.. we transformed his project on 32 bit uc now he is getting it done on 64 bit... frm somebody else...

what i mean is 8051 has almost no disadvantage as beginner.. but as you begin to get
into real work u wud tend to use other ics, nevertheless once u r done with 8051 u can handle almost any microcontroller

Thanks mate...

I have downloaded heaps of free eBooks over the last couple of days and some 'free'
C development tools.

So I guess all I need is the hardware (see my thread on General help and Guidance Forum) - looks like a good excuse to buy myself a graduation present !dance

you can use either AVR or 8051...
if you want to get ready for next generation 32 bit architectures then use AVR coz the assembly is very similar to that of 32 bit controllers..

But as Shyam said.. for a newbie.. 8051 is the best.. when i was a newbie.. i used 8051 too and till today i feel 8051 is the best
