it works same no difference in installed version and portable version
Portable version uses less cache and registry info

Example:

you have installed MS Office 2003 and also have a portable version of it.....

first you are working with installed one and you quit the program without saving.....
when you reopen the program it will show the unsaved copy of the work and will ask you do u wanna save it?
this unsaved copy in saved in cache memory which is in form of temporary files....
But in case of Portable version these files are not used in this sense portable version of software use less memory to compile your work and if you quit your work without saving it will not show you unsaved copy in next reopen....
