Use mobile phone which support AT Commands. you can directly connect that phone via datacable to your microcontroller kit at a baud rate of 9600 and you can send AT commands to your phone to read and send sms.

The first thing you need to do is find a mobile phone with AT Commands. Recommendation is use sony erricson's 290i

@amit,

AT called 'attention' commands are a standard set of instructions used by the host to communicate with a GSM device. Try googling for more info , u will get tons of info.

well RS232 is the only interface commonly supported by most of controllers. So, you can only use those phones with com port interface.

I'm sure if you go to any cellphone repair shop you find that they have piles of old spares/scraps you could a build a working mobile from. I got some funny looks from them when I asked them for it, but flash a little green and they'll be happy to part with a few items that have no marketable use. I've been quite successful in this way lately.

Just remember to use a MAX232 if you going to connect the cell to the PC.
