I must be missing something really obvious, but I don't see how to use the AddThis social bookmarking plugin. I installed it and there's one preference which is simply to help see stats on how the plug in is being used. But I don't see where/how it is supposed to appear under my news items. Please help.

It will come automatically, but your theme must support it.
please quote the theme name you are using.

I'm using Crahan, which I modified heavily to my liking. I assume this theme doesn't support it. Is there a way I can reference it? I've edited theme.php and news.php to put category variables and the like on each item. Is there a {ADDTHIS} thing I can use?

Simply add {ADDTHIS} shortcode in news template in theme.php it will work.

I am using the Reline plug-in and it seems to break the formatting of my newsposts when I add the {ADDTHIS} code.

you need to make changes in Addthis.sc file according to your theme, but as such i feel there is nothing special or related to theme added in addthis formatting.
can you post a small cutout screeshot of what is going wrong?
