Hi, new user. First question I've got a unit with an update file for an atmel processor. the provided file type is a .dwn format. Has anyone come across this before ? Does it just need renaming to hex

Can you attach the file? Dwn is a firmware file format. Do you have a firmware update tool or software for your unit? It should accept this file format.

Here's the file (had to rename ext to . gif to allow upload, needs changing to .dwn) . The unit just has the processor on the board, no headers or anything. Discontinued unit, but a later software available. Advice in manual for upgrade it to change the processor. Advice from manufacturer (no support anymore) is need an eprom burner, and file is just binaries. Files on their site, but just in .dwn format.

Convert the dwn file to a zip or rar file, then attach it.
What is the device/board you have ?

The device is a controller for stage lighting. The board has a single processor AT89C55WD

The file is special format probably like a bin file only the software with the board can understand it. If you want to try then just rename it to .bin and try loading it with a 8051 programmer. Hope it will work.

Hi, just to say thanks. I bought a programmer, chucked it in as a bin file and it worked a treat.
